Archival Collection Guides (Finding Aids) and Digitized Collections

View finding aids for archival collections created by local government agencies (primarily the County of Sonoma) and by the Library. The collections are housed in the Library's Special Collections -- the Local History and Genealogy Library, Petaluma History Room, Wine Library, and Library Archives. Though the vast majority of these collections have not been digitized, those collections with digitized items are noted in the list below and in the full collection descriptions.

Biblioteca Vinaria Sonoma (SPC.00076)

 

The Biblioteca Vinaria Sonoma draws from the Sonoma County Wine Library's collection of historic books and documents, primarily from the 16th to early 20th century. The collection covers all aspects of viticulture and winemaking, ranging from proclamations of George III on wine regulations to letters describing the grape production in Sonoma Valley vineyards, and from temperance operas to nursery catalogs.

Individual photographs and examples of commercial publications featuring photos by Don Meacham (1916-2010), photojournalist for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and freelance photographer.

Lothers & Young Studios Collection, about 1920-1930 (SPC.00014)

Hayden D. Lothers (1894-1938) and Ralph W. Young (1892-1938) formed a partnership in 1920 he formed a partnership and opened a studio at 165 Post Street, San Francisco (later located at 419 Sutter, San Francisco). Lothers & Young Studios became successful commercial photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout the 1920’s. The Lothers & Young Studios Collection contains a selection of photographs from Sonoma and Mendocino counties, as well as a number of photographs of San Francisco.

Robert Feuer collection of music writings, 2005-2018 (SPC.00045)

The Robert Feuer Collection of Music Writings, 2005-2018 (SPC.00045) consists of clippings of Robert Feuer's monthly music columns and other writings primarily reviewing concerts and album releases. Feuer is a Sonoma County-based music journalist whose writings have been published in a variety of Sonoma County newspapers, including the Russian River Monthly; the Russian River Times; the North Bay Bohemian; the Argus Courier (Petaluma, Calif.); Oak Leaf (Santa Rosa Junior College); and the Sonoma County Gazette. Most items include photographs of musicians, bands, and others connected with Sonoma County's music scene.

Sonoma County In The ... Television Series, 1979-2003 (SCG.00009)

 

The Sonoma County in the ... Television Series presents a selection from a long run of television programs entitled "Sonoma County in the [70s, etc.]" produced between the late 1970s and late 1990s for Sonoma County public access cable television under direction of the Sonoma County Public Information Office, now known as the County Administrator's Office.

Sonoma County Visionaries, Immigrants and Winemakers Collection, about 1865-2005 (SPC.00086)

 

The Sonoma County Wine Library's online local history collection includes images of historical interest of the Sonoma County wine industry from the 1870s through the 1990s. These images portray the winemakers and companies of Sonoma County, past and present. They document the immigrants and Utopians who founded the early wineries, wine families, the vineyards and wine production, promotional postcards, and the many varieties of wine created in Sonoma County.
