Affidavits of Anna Pohlmann and Bertha Sundell concerning the character of Dr. Melville M. Shearer, 1900 (SPC.00054)

The collection consists of three documents, two affidavits and a statement by the Santa Rosa Ministerial Union, that were found in the Sonoma County Archives among Board of Supervisors records. One affidavit (dated 4 April 1900, San Francisco) is written and signed by Anna Pohlmann, a former matron at Sonoma County Hospital. The other affidavit (dated 9 April 1900, San Jose) is written and signed by Bertha Sundell, a former nurse at Sonoma County Hospital. The statement by the Ministerial Union is addressed to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors (dated and filed 8 May 1900) and signed by seven union members.

Biblioteca Vinaria Sonoma (SPC.00076)

 

The Biblioteca Vinaria Sonoma draws from the Sonoma County Wine Library's collection of historic books and documents, primarily from the 16th to early 20th century. The collection covers all aspects of viticulture and winemaking, ranging from proclamations of George III on wine regulations to letters describing the grape production in Sonoma Valley vineyards, and from temperance operas to nursery catalogs.

California Republic sesquicentennial, 1846-1996 envelope set,1996 (SPC.00030)

The collection contains six commemorative, stamped and canceled envelopes celebrating the California Republic sesquicentennial anniversary in 1996. Envelopes include: Bear Flag Sequicentennial Committee, with Bear Flag raising ceremony in the Sonoma Plaza illustration; Mariano Guadelupe Vallejo, with Lachryma Montis (Vallejo's Sonoma home) illustration; Sum-Yet-Ho (Solano), Chief of Suysunes tribe; Bear Flag creation at Sonoma Barracks; John C. Frémont and the "Bear Flag" Battalion, June 14, 1846; and raising of the 28-star flag of the United States at the Sonoma Plaza. Stanps were canceled June 14, 1996 at the Sonoma Plaza Station, Sonoma, California.

Cole family letters, 1865-1951 (SPC.00009)

This collection contains the letters of the Cole family, who resided in Salt Point Township. Most of the letters are addressed to Priscilla Livingston Cole (1838-1926). On one envelope was handwritten "letters of Grandma Coles." There are three letters written from Justus Hull Cole (1828-1922) to his wife, Priscilla. One letter is addressed to Jim (James) Christensen, Priscilla Cole's son-in-law. Another document is a description of the wedding of James Christensen to Mary Violet Cole, which took place on August 12, 1896 at Fisherman's Bay in the Stewarts Point area.

Colgan business collection, 1869-1935 (SPC.00051)

The collection contains account books and different types of invoices and receipts of businesses operated by three generations of Colgan family members: The Pioneer Hotel, the Colgan Bros. Blacksmithing and Horseshoeing Company, and Colgan's Super Service Station. All businesses were located on the same site at the corner of First and Main Streets in Santa Rosa.

Don Meacham Photography Collection, 1930-1985 (SPC.00012)

This collection contains prints, negatives, and published examples of commercial work illustrated by Santa Rosa Press Democrat and commercial photographer, Don Meacham. The majority of the collection is comprised of photographic negatives and prints produced throughout his career. The commercial works that comprise the remainder of the collection are a set of pamphlets, folders, reports, etc. containing a variety of Meacham's photographs.

Gaye LeBaron collection of Santa Rosa (Calif.) business promotional ephemera, 1917-1954 (SPC.00056)

Collection consists of twenty-one printed ephemera relating to businesses in Santa Rosa. Contains brochures, postcards, notebooks and notepads from banks, auto dealers, stationary stores, paint stores, hardware stores and other businesses, and includes a fold-out Thanksgiving turkey promotional card from the Central Outfitting Co. at 237 Fourth Street in downtown Santa Rosa. While the dates for these items range from 1917 to 1954, the majority are from 1930. Business addresses and dates (when available) provided for each item.

James H. Shepard register of Civil War pension applications, November 1891-November 1892 (SPC.00049)

This collection contains several items related to the work of San Francisco pension attorney James L. Shepard (born Jan. 1843 in Bergen, New Jersey; died Apr. 10, 1917, in Oakland, Calif.). The primary item is a ledger book of clients containing 559 chronological name entries from Nov. 9, 1891 to Nov. 7, 1892 of Civil War veterans that identifies them by name, service unit, residence, pension application/certificate numbers, disability and other data. The collection includes a partially-completed form filled out by Abby (aka Abbie) L. McChesney (nee Abigail Lincoln Hunt; Aug. 31 1856-Oct. 5, 1917) of San Francisco, Calif. , widow of Robert Watson McChesney (Aug. 17, 1831-Nov. 23, 1908), full 2nd Sergeant in Company B, Iowa 36th Infantry Regiment. Also included are a memo from Ray Owen, researcher, to Tony Hoskins, Local History and Genealogy Librarian, dated Agu. 5, 2014, providing a summary of information on Shepard, and several pages of background information printed from Ancestry.com and other sources.

John L. Rinn music collection, 1995-1998 (SPC.00032)

This collection contains music arranged and collected by John L. Rinn. Approximately half the collection consists of barbershop quartet arrangements Rinn created for his quartet, the Rinntones. Other materials include piano arrangements of pop and jazz pieces; arrangement source materials; and miscellaneous music. Collection includes one of two cassette tapes containing Rinn's instrumental music.

John Schubert collection of Sonoma County court documents, 1847-1979 (SPC.00016)

This collection contains a compilation of Sonoma County court-related correspondence, letterhead, rules, rosters, and business cards culled by John Schubert, a Russian River historian, while he served the county as a deputy sheriff for 39 years. The administrative records and letterhead include those of Sonoma County's Municipal Court, District Court, Superior Court, County Clerk, and judges' chambers primarily from the 1930s through the 1970s.

This collection contains an album with approximately 100 photographs taken by Kanaye Nagasawa in July 1904 during a visit to Yosemite Valley.

Ken Darby Bohemian Club music manuscript collection,1950-1983 (SPC.00037)

This collection contains sheet music for programs at the Bohemian Club's Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, California. Most music composed or arranged by Ken Darby. Collection is a mix of original manuscripts and photocopied scores with annotations. The majority of scores are labeled by Darby as part of the annual Preachers' Sons Night program held at Bohemian Grove during the annual summer encampment between 1963 and 1983. Most are single scores, but there is a complete packet for the 1983 program with cover letter from Darby to Bob Minser at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, dated 15 April, 1983. Lyrics for a number of pieces written by Wallace (Wally) Sterling, retired president of Stanford University; others includes notes to or are dedicated to Sterling. Also includes copy of the score for Madera (music, D. Swan; text, M. Flanders) inscribed and signed by Lou Gottlieb, founder of the Morningstar Ranch commune in Occidental, Calif., and a copy of Darby's theme music for the 1953 short cartoon, The Martins & the Coys.

Ladies Aid Society records, 1903-1987 (SPC.00055)

This collection comprises the administrative records and correspondence of the Ladies Aid Society, a social and philanthropic women’s organization founded in 1903 in the Todd district of Santa Rosa. The society purchased property on Stony Point Rd. in 1929, which was used by the community until it was sold in 1968. Interest from the mortgage payments were used to provide annual “camperships” to youth from the Bellvue District to Mt. Gilead Bible Camp in Sebastopol. The society met as a small group socially until it disbanded in 1973. It continued funding the camperships through 1987. The collection primarily includes meeting minutes, membership and attendance records, the constitution and bylaws, and treasury records.

Lippitt & Lippitt papers, 1904-1934 (SPC.00048)

This collection contains court documents filed by and for Petaluma attorney Frank K. Lippett. Includes civil cases related to estates and other matters represented by Lippitt betwen 1904 and 1934. Includes typescript copies of wills and subsequent announcements, attorney notes, court orders and file copies of court transcripts. Records relating to the estate of Martin O'Reilly, dated June 1913-January 1917, were executed by Petaluma attorney Newton A. Johnson; Frank K. Lippitt served as executor.

Lothers & Young Studios Collection, about 1920-1930 (SPC.00014)

Hayden D. Lothers (1894-1938) and Ralph W. Young (1892-1938) formed a partnership in 1920 he formed a partnership and opened a studio at 165 Post Street, San Francisco (later located at 419 Sutter, San Francisco). Lothers & Young Studios became successful commercial photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout the 1920’s. The Lothers & Young Studios Collection contains a selection of photographs from Sonoma and Mendocino counties, as well as a number of photographs of San Francisco.

Pedersen's Furniture Company records, 1903-2017 (SPC.00085)

This collection contains the business records of Pedersen's Furniture Company, which was known as Santa Rosa's oldest family-owned store until its closure in 2019. The collection includes family photographs, advertisements, ledgers and ephemera documenting the history of the company. It was founded in 1892 by Jens Christian Pedersen, a Danish immigrant and cabinet maker. The collection also includes photos of the 1906 earthquake and several issues of the Santa Rosa High School Newsletter.

Feuer is a Sonoma County-based music journalist whose writings have been published in a variety of Sonoma County newspapers, including the Russian River Monthly; the Russian River Times; the North Bay Bohemian; the Argus Courier (Petaluma, Calif.); Oak Leaf (Santa Rosa Junior College); and the Sonoma County Gazette. Most items include photographs of musicians, bands, and others connected with Sonoma County's music scene.

William Nicholas Connolly scrapbook, 1905-1959 (bulk, 1912-1923)

This collection consists of a single scrapbook compiled by William Nicholas "Will" Connolly (1905-1987). The scrapbook contains photographs taken between 1905 and approximately 1955 and some newspaper clippings. The vast majority of the photos date from 1912 through 1922 and show Will Connolly, his family, and his friends. Most of the photographs were taken around his hometown of Petaluma and in other Sonoma County locations, including Rio Nido and the Russian River. The scrapbook also contains photos were taken in Marin County and feature images of Dillon Beach, Muir Woods, and Mount Tamalpais--including the Mount Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway. In addition, the album contains clippings from 1925; several loose photos dated from 1943 to 1955; an undated and unidentified cabinet card; and a clipping from the San Francisco Sunday Examiner & Chronicle's California Living magazine of October 26, 1969.
