The Santa Rosa Metropolitan Airport is visible to the east of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad tracks.

Biographical or Historical Note

Santa Rosa Metropolitan/Coddingtown Airport in north Santa Rosa, California, was built off of Piner Road in 1960, replacing the early and shortlived Santa Rosa Airpark. The 1962 AOPA Airport Directory described "Santa Rosa Metropolitan Airport" as having a single 3,800' paved runway, and listed the operator as "Andy's Aircraft Sales". The airfield was evidently renamed Santa Rosa Coddingtown at some point between 1962-65 and depicted as having a 3,200' paved north/south runway (later listing depict it as 3,050'). Coddingtown Airport was initially owned by Santa Rosa Enterprises. Almost 200 planes were based at Coddingtown Airport at its height, including the Cessna 421 owned by Codding Enterprises. Ownership of Coddingtown Airport was transferred to Codding Enterprises in 1968. Coddingtown Airport was closed by 1972, in no small part because of its proximity to residential areas and complaints about noise. However, Santa Rosa Coddingtown continued to have a more minor aviation use for at least a few years as a heliport. The site of the former Santa Rosa Coddingtown Airport has since been densely redeveloped, but the hangers and main office buildings are still there (as of 2017) and have been converted to industrial uses. Creator Note

Photographer Don Meacham (May 30, 1916-Feb. 28, 2010) was born in Cowell, Contra Costa County in 1916. He lived most of his life in Sonoma County where he retired as freelance commercial photographer after 50 years in the profession. He worked as a photographer in the Navy during WWII; was the flagship photographer on the U.S.S. Augusta during the North African invasion; and was Chief Photographer of the Naval Air Station in Santa Rosa until the war ended. Meacham was a charter member and chairman of the Santa Rosa Civic Art Commission and was instrumental in establishing Arttrium, the county's first visual and performing arts festival.
