Biographical or Historical Note

This is the most significant surviving example of a stone hop kiln in the North Coast region. Built by Angelo 'Skinny' Sodini in 1905, it served the Russian River Valley and North Coast regions, once the major hop-growing areas in the West. In the latter part of the 19th century, Sol Walters purchased 380 acres, part of the Sotoyome Rancho patented in 1853, from Josefa Fitch. The kilns were operational from 1905 to 1940, during the height of hop production for beer in Sonoma County. After the hop kiln closed down, the 240-acre ranch became a sheep ranch. In 1960, Dr. Martin Griffin purchased the ranch and began restoring the hop kiln with the help of friends and a barn builder. Griffin converted the property into a winery to finance the project, making use of the 100-year-old Petite Sirah and Zinfandel grapes already growing on the property -- vines originally planted to produce wine for the ranch workers. Griffin's care in restoring the kilns led to recognition on the State Registry of Historic Places in 1976.
