Biographical or Historical Note

Santa Rosa Plaza is one of two enclosed shopping malls in Santa Rosa, California. Opened in 1983, it is anchored by Sears, Macy's, and Forever 21. The mall is managed by Simon Property Group. The mall and its parking garages are located across six blocks bounded B Street on the east, First Street on south, Morgan Street (in part) on the west, and Seventh Street on the north (the 500 block of Morgan and A streets is not included). Although the mall was approved as part of a second wave of downtown redevelopment in the years following a destructive 1969 earthquake, development was delayed for many years due to legal disputes between developers Ernest Hahn and Hugh Codding, the latter of whom owned nearby Coddingtown Mall. Codding ultimately lost the settlement. Construction began in the late 1970s, including demolition of a number of significant downtown buildings such as the California Theater that formerly stood in the location now occupied by Macy's, the first store in the development to open. The department store opened in 1981 and the remainder had opened by 1983.

Creator Note

Photographer Don Meacham (May 30, 1916-Feb. 28, 2010) was born in Cowell, Contra Costa County in 1916. He lived most of his life in Sonoma County where he retired as freelance commercial photographer after 50 years in the profession. He worked as a photographer in the Navy during WWII; was the flagship photographer on the U.S.S. Augusta during the North African invasion; and was Chief Photographer of the Naval Air Station in Santa Rosa until the war ended. Meacham was a charter member and chairman of the Santa Rosa Civic Art Commission and was instrumental in establishing Arttrium, the county's first visual and performing arts festival.
