Biographical or Historical Note

Completed in 1939 at a cost of $177,200. Building later renamed Burbank Memorial Auditorium in honor of Luther Burbank. The actual auditorium seats 700 people for a variety of performances. Initial occupants of the total building included music, speech, and the theater arts. Two remodeling projects expanded the original structure. In 1965, the staging area for theater productions was enlarged; in 1980, another expansion and redistribution of space by Architect Thomas Tomasi accommodated both communication studies and theater arts, following the departure of music for Forsyth Hall in 1979. Caulkin's building is noted in an article in Architect and Engineer, v. 143, no. 2 (Nov. 1940), p. 22-39: Architectural regions--do they exist? / by Irving F. Morrow.
