Description

Corrugated metal-sided buildings of the former Sebastopol Cooperative Cannery buildings stand at the back of an empty lot with an abandoned set of railroad tracks.

Biographical or Historical Note

The Sebastopol Cooperative Cannery was founded in 1949 by 23 area apple growers. With the decline of the apple industry, all the downtown Sebastopol buildings were gradually abandoned and operations consolidated at the plant located at Hwy 116 and Occidental Road. In the early 1980s, Sebastopol Cooperative Cannery, at the time, still the largest apple processor in California, encountered financial difficulties and had its assets seized by its major lender.

Creator Note

Hal Skinner (1925-2004) moved to Sonoma County from Indiana in 1965 to serve as the first director of the Audio-Visual Department (later Instructional Resources Department) at Sonoma State College (later University). He later taught in the School of Education until retiring in 1988. He took up artist blacksmithing in retirement and was a featured exhibitor at the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol and Sturgeon's Sawmill in Occidental until his death at age 79.
