Biographical or Historical Note

The Walls House, commonly known as Haystack House, was the family home of the Walls family, beginning in 1888 when David Walls bought the house, built some years prior in the marshy area known as Haystack Landing, adjacent to the Petaluma River. Haystack Landing was an important stop along the river during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Walls family owned the house until the 1940s, after which the property changed hands several times. Renters continued to live in the house until the 1970s, when it fell into greater and greater disrepair and became a haven for squatters. The house also gained a reputation as being haunted. It burned down completely in the early morning hours of September 1, 2004 under suspicious circumstances. The cause of the fire was never determined, but fire officials suspected arson.
