A view of the park's pergola and pool.

Biographical or Historical Note

Originally the site of the Juilliard family home, the land was donated by Frederic Juilliard in 1931. Funding for the park came from the City of Santa Rosa Relief Fund and at least two federal programs during the Great Depression: the Civil Works Administration and Works Progress Administration (WPA). Landscape architect Howard Gilkey (1890-1972), a former city park engineer for the city of Oakland, served as a work-relief employee of the WPA supervising 3,500 people engaged in the renovation of Golden Gate Park. During the 1930s, Gilkey, who had spent his teens in Santa Rosa, returned, and designed Juilliard Park, Burbank Park at the Santa Rosa Junior College, as well as Fremont and Doyle Park. Gilkey would later be hired to work on the 1939/40 Golden Gate International Exposition at Treasure Island.
