Creator Note

Skelton Sanford Noble was located on Main Street, Petaluma, California at the time of the photo. Noble was a photographer active throughout Central California between 1863 and 1886, beginning with a business license in the "Second Division" of an unidentified city in 1863. By 1865, he had opened a gallery in Grass Valley, followed by a series of moves and ownership of additional galleries in various locales, in cluding Gold Run, Placer County (1867), Nevada City (also 1867), Eureka (Nevada County, 1867-1870), Truckee (1868-1870), San Rafael (1871), and Moore's Flat (Nevada County, 1872). By 1874, Noble was involved in the firm of Noble and Fell on Main Street (now Petaluma Boulevard North), Petaluma, California, followed by ownership of the Sunbeam Gallery in 1875. His activities for the remainder of the 1870s are unknown, but in 1880, he owned a gallery in Cambria, where he lived until at least 1886. (Source: Palmquist, Peter E., and Thomas R. Kailbourn.
