- Description
- Photo--black and white: mounted poster of Browns Canyon Trestle in Occidental, 1900. The wooden Brown's Canyon Trestle was built in 1876, a half mile south of Occidental by the North Pacific Coast Railroad. At that time it was the highest of its kind in the US. 96,000 board feet of lumber was used to build it. It was an engineering and construction feat for the rr. Trains carried passengers, baggage and mail from SF Bay to Point Reyes, Tomales, Occidental, Camp Meeker, Monte Rio, Duncans Mills and Cazadero. Everytone turned out to greet the train when it arrived in Occidental, the highest point to be reached by the railroad, 575 feet.
