- Description
- Photo, black and white: Queen of Holy Ghost Feast and her court circa 1950, Claudia Gonsalvas queen-center seated, her attendents are unidentified. Background: Portuguese Americans who settled in Sebastopol brought from the Azores the Catholic celebration of the Feast of the Holy Ghost. The festival started centuries ago in honor of Queen Isabel of Portugal, who during a time of great famine fed her people and whose faith in the Holy Ghost was unwavering. The long celebration culminates with a 'feast' of beef and bread representing Isabel's gift. Young women from the congregaton are chosen to represent Queen Isabel and her court.
