Biographical or Historical Note

Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Foppiano, Foppiano Vineyards is one of Sonoma County's oldest continually-operated, family-owned wineries. The Foppiano family survived Prohibition in the 1920s by selling home wine making kits. Foppiano moved from producing primarily jug wines to higher quality bottled wines in the 1970s under the direction of Louis Foppiano, Sr.

FOPPIANO Vineyards A Walking Tour of Our Russian River Valley Vineyard Estate The beauty of wine country; the sculpted elegance of vineyards that seem to run on forever; the perfume of ripening fruit drifting through the air. All those things which make the Sonoma wine country one of the most beautiful areas in America also mask a very simple fact: Making wine is an agricultural endeavor. What this simple fact means is that the bottle of wine you open with dinner will reflect the quality of the fruit from which it was made. The quality of that wine will also reflect the skill and dedication of the winemaker who transformed ripe grapes into wine. Yet, regardless of how talented a winemaker may be, mediocre fruit will result in good wine at best, inferior wine at worst. It is for this reason that we pay such close attention to our Russian River Valley vineyards.
