Description
Photo--black and white: Luther Burbank's cottage at Gold Ridge Experiment Farm in Sebastopol, 1927. Cottage front is vine-covered with large birch tree to right. Three men stand to right of the birch. Typed caption taped to picture states: "Luther Burbank's office house on Gold Ridge Experiment Farm, now being used as a Laboratory by Stark Pomological Research Laboratories. (Pomology is the scientific study and cultivation of fruit). Bureau Staff, including John T. Bregger, right, in foreground is checking lilac records left by Mr. Burbank." Burbank died in 1926. After Luther died Mrs. Burbank established an apple orchard on a portion of the Farm and leased the rest to Stark Brothers Nursery of Missouri. Background: Burbank lived in Santa Rosa but used this cottage in Sebastopol as an office and workshop where the botanist kept detailed records of his extensive plant experiments on his 18 acre farm which he had purchased in 1885.
