- Description
- Photo--black and white: Early wood fired apple dryer probably late 1800s near Occidental. This was probably one of the first dryers built in the area. A wood fired brick kiln built in the floor of the building. Flat racks of sliced apples stacked within the building would be dried by the fire. Sulfur was added to fire to keep the apples from turning brown. A worker with a large flat shovel would turn the apple slices to be evenly dried. The exhaust (chimney) is seen at the top of the kiln.
