- Description
- Photo--black and white: Photo identified by Jim Thorpe and Ralph S. Sturgeon and numbered "logging 99." JIM THORPE: Early 1920's. The Thorpe twins, June & Jewell, Coleman Valley School (far right) Load from Thorpe's sawmill, Fageol truck. Dionisio Donati told Ralph S. Sturgeon (Feb 7, 1974) that Bob Bittner bought the "Sindy" side spool (capstan) from Duncan Mills along about 1915. Logged some of chic gulch. "Chicken" now Calvi's & the last logging operation on Gysson ranch. Far creek side. Bob's mill shut down for good in 1922. RALPH STURGEON: "I remember also when J. W. Gonnella, Donati's and others logged redwood up hill to road, donkey on Joy Road. On west side of Calvi's home place. Mandy Yarbrough Thorpe said she drove this load out-delivered lumber many times when her husband William Thorpe was gone. How thought of her to take these many snap shots. I was talking to Jewel Thorpe Chenoweth this morning about 9:20 Saturday August 4th, 1979, said she had just found a negative of her mother in a solid tire truck (cab) with a load & her husband Bill standing along side, (the only one with her) so she it seems, always took the snap shots. So many years later I bring the story to light. I've thought of doing this for years! I ordered 2 8X10. Isn't it rather unusual that the William Arnold story by I and Mrs. John Jorgensen (Pearl) and this one to written up by Jewel and Tom Chapman--that both husbands name would be William--but in one way so very, very different, but so very capable."
