Sonoma County chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned, according to the famed plant wizard Luther Burbank Diverse County, with 1,010,000 acres of land and 1574 miles of scenic roadways, Cinema County is rightfully famed for its agriculture, viticulture, industry and recreation, as

well as for the amazingly successful ethnic and economic mixture of its more than 340,000 residents on for the forward looking philosophy of its local governing bodies. Now we invite you to take a closer look at Sonoma County in the eighties with your host Rich McGlinchy high

treason. McManus, we're here to bring you the 1989 Sonoma County sheriff 53rd edition of the fair is about to begin. You know, most of us think in terms of the fair being an activity here in Sonoma County since 1936 Pretty stop. Take a look. You realize

the first there was held in 18. 55 in 18 55 was held here in Santa Rosa. Think about the next 40 years. Kind of moved all over. Sonoma County was in Bastar pool with a little more heels, Healdsburg, Sonoma and back here in Santa Rosa and

actually got started, though in 1936 when four men. Mr Grayson is definitely out. Mr Kraft. What? Their money with enough, you might think. Got out there. Started. What do you think this 1980 will be like? Well, so far promises to be bigger and better than last

year's fair. We have the Rabbit, which is the feature animal this year. Way Have music. We have great food. Ray Cam. It shows air back for the third year in a row. It promises to be an absolutely fantastic time, most still very day. Many things it

has exam. It's for kids. Demitra adults. It has horse racing. Has a magnificent flower show, has a product examined in the main building of over 200 items that you could come in and try and wave the rodeo. Coming right. Johnny Cash and the Mexican Village is

always and my favorite, the blue special. Well, how about the animal exhibit? Well, there's the rabbit display that's on the other side of family whole. There's land there flying something everywhere that you can actually put a rabbit to sleep so I'm gonna try. Just don't put

the audience to sleep. Try not to. Okay? Those are other things that you're gonna tell you this. 1989 pair. Three. So I think we have to go on a date with some things all about. Let's go inside and take What? Hi. I'm here with my friend

the rabbit. The featured animal at the snow, My county fair. This year, you can see the rabbits on display each day just west of Finley Hall. In the agricultural display area, there's 20 breeds of rabbits. This particular one is a Himalayan. Looks kind like a Siamese

cat to me. Anyway, come over and take a look at the rabbits. There's also guinea pigs as well. They'll be demonstrations. There'll be a petting area for you to bring your kids to pet animals and the rabbit display trailer located just left of me, where you

can go in and see porcelain rabbits, some arts and crafts and even some rabbit jackets. Come on over and see the rabbits. They're awful cute. Well, welcome back to the 1989 Sonoma County Fair. It's the 53rd and Sonoma County Fair, and it may well be the

best bear we've ever had a gentleman on the left of your screen. My guess moment here has had a lot to do with this kind of overseen all the various committee and seen that despair has been brought to its opening on hope. That's going to be

very successful. A gentleman named Jack Edinger, president of Airborne. Jack, I want to see you again. Yeah. Pleasure. Uh, Jack, this is the 53rd annual fair on the fair. Every year is a great experience, but people could come to bear. There is something for everyone, and

it doesn't necessarily have to cost him before he does it. Well, that's right. Which is just a whole lot of things here for everyone. We have the flowers show junior livestock exhibits. The auction horse racing exhibit Buildings were just full of very nice things to see

everything from pies and cakes to fruit handicraft type works. Just a lot of things for people here, from all walks alive to enjoy and come out and have a good time. How about special days of very special days? So we do have several special days, and

they're listed here. Have half price day, Monday, July 24th and money the 31st horse racing days. Of course, the the horse racing track is open to general admission. We have a pay one price day on Tuesday, July 25th and again on Tuesday, August, the first unlimited

rise in the Carnival Senior Citizens Day. A very popular day. All individuals over 62 are admitted free to the fairgrounds. US. Wednesday July the 26. We have a two for one Buddy Day, Wednesday, July 26 Wednesday August 2nd. There's Kids Day on one car day. Just

a lot of different types of opportunities and days for people to come and visit a fair. Yeah, And you know another thing I noticed people doing last year. And this is something else. You might do you a little bit on the short side budget. Why you

want to bring the family? You can come out, bring a picnic lunch, go up to the founders, go but haven't. And then you can enter. Be entertained. You could be entertained everywhere here for nothing catching. Well, we sure you sure can. The there are just the

number of stages throughout the fairgrounds, where there will be performance performing regular even during the day and in the evenings. And all of these shows are for the most part of free. It doesn't cost anything to visit them with the red with theater or in various

stages throughout the fairgrounds. Some of the activities and you might be in enjoying Tower of Power asleep at the wheel or a Camacho Ban. Papa Doo Run Run the PRC a radio. Johnny Cash Cash is a paid show, but all of rest are free carnivals. Another

carnival. We're just very, very happy with the rake, Emmick shows is a splendid, splendid show. It's very clean, and the people are courteous and kind. I think you'll find that your Children and adults as well we'll have a great time, our carnival this year. Yeah, you

know, and I Behind us. Here is the themed poster for our theme cannibal this year, which is the rabbit and who created that hair raising experience? Well, I think all that couldn't have to go to Jane Ing all our special events coordinator. She just is an

amazing person who comes up year after year with just great things for people of all ages and walks of life. You know, these rabbits they showed in the pre fair shows around here just caught the fancy of everybody there. Beautiful. Well, they surely are. And we

every years, you know, we try to select Do select an animal to feature at our fair, and this year happens to be the rabbit. You'll see some magicians around the fairgrounds pulling everything out of their hat butter rabbit. But I'm sure that you will enjoy that.

It's very interesting. Well, I think we've trapped. Tell everybody briefly what's going to happen. The fair runs from July 24. On the sixth, the fairgrounds are open from 10 to 10 with Carnival going on till midnight. Admission is $4 for adults, $1 for kids, seven through

12 for kids seven and under. And the military uniforms can always come in free. There is truly something everyone. We're gonna be telling you a lot more things about this bear Grease and McManus, and I'll be talking to a lot of people looking at a lot

of different events. But now let's go on and seems tomorrow. There's a wonderful 1989 county fair. Hello, everybody. Welcome from the winner's circle of the Sonoma County Fair racetrack were standing in front of this beautiful track, and they're trying to be as seeing of activity from

July 25th gets 60 pretending with two gentlemen who have been a part of racing at the Cinema County Fair for at least four decades. On the right of your screen is throwing her house red on the left of the screen Is Bob work? Probable chat with

you for a moment. First, if we many Bob Worth is the racing editor for this Noma County Fair. He's also a long time published director for Barry Attracts Listing Bob, You have a long, long background in racing and publicity and that sort of thing. How do

you get people to come to a racetrack? Well, this is a fascinating game, really. And, uh, you have to interest people to begin with in the fact that it is a sport that these horses are beautiful animals. And then you have to convince him to that

it's awfully nice to bet on a winner. Bet $2 on a winner and you are a participant. You're not a spectator Europe participant. You're riding that horse as much as the jockey and you have to get people to love the game and also the win a

buck once in a while. That really nice. I know that I had a winner once. We're gonna talk to a slaughterhouse Red over here. Slaughterhouse. You're a veteran like Bob of 40 or 50 years on the track, and it will be coming up to this track

for at least 40 years. Uruk Locker At present. Thomas. First of all, what does the clock or do read well for its developed. The fresh step we take is, uh, to get the name of the horse and how far he's going. And then we time the

horse from whatever poorly leaves. He may leave the 38 poll, the half mile pole of 58 bowl, or anyone which one pull that he leaves. We have to time. And when he finishes, we remarked the time down. And then when we get through for the day

for the morning, we run it through a computer and that goes into the daily race and form for the next day, and the people have the advantage of looking at the times and a lot of betters go on time. Indeed they do. In fact, if you

don't have those workouts in the racing form, you're really not up to date on the condition of the horse. Are you know that you got you gotta look at the time to see how he's working. And if he works once a week, you know that there's

nothing wrong with his legs or anything. And so and you compare the times and that's the way they handy, Captain, some of the good handy. We're gonna have another house red visit us during the racing seven r, and he's agreed that he's going Teoh offer a

few of his famous selections to the people there. But what you did a couple of years ago, and, uh, and that seemed to work out quite well. Western red. Do you go to all the different tracks? Uh, no. I I retired from Bay Meadows in Golden

Gate Fields when, uh, when I was 70 and you can't be 70 Red 74. And, uh, you come here. I have stocked in, and I have this beautiful track here and the state fair I have that. And this track here is really something. This track is

beautiful. The horses bounce over. Looks like it's not fast, but it is terrific. Klay fast. Well, thank you very much. Red Tank, for taking a minute. I know Red is right now clocking horses. And, uh, really good of you to come over here and visit with

up here to the racing editor. What do you think of the track? It's I'll tell you, we're standing down here looking at it right now, and I never saw such beautiful soil. You can see how dark it is that this is a summer track. There's not

a lot of sand in it which can be abrasive, the horse's hooves and so forth that this is a good looking racetrack. And also, when these horses go by, we're standing right in front of you. Don't even hear him. It's like running on a carpet. This

is a beautiful racing strip, Bob. Thank you very much for taking a minute. Stay here with me for a moment. Ladies and gentlemen, we've been talking to Slaughterhouse Red Famous figure at the racetrack locker today. And Bob Worth are racing editor here. It's the Snowmen County

fair and a well known publicly director for the Bay Area. Tracked for many, many years. And now let's go on and see more of this magnificent 1989 Sonoma County Fair. Hi. I'm here in front of the sheep barn with my friend Mike and his friend who

doesn't have a name. Mike. What? Forage Clever You from firm growth, Which is where In Bodega. And can you give me a little background on what you did to get your lamb here to the fair today way had we hired a man to share our sheep

and then a couple days before the fair, we washed them. And then we showed today. And how long did it take you to wash your lamb? Only about 15 minutes apiece. Use a little Woolite on him. Yeah, Yeah. Uh, several years back, I was a sheep

exhibitor. myself at the fair. But things have changed a little bit, including the wait. How much did your lamb weigh? £115. And what is the cut off? Wait 100. And wolf? It's his two. Lightest below 93 is you don't make it in and 135 too much.

Well, you still get to sell your lamp of its 135. You just get the sell for 100 point. Oh, well, that's great. What breed of lamb is this? Hampshire. And can you tell us how you place today? Second place little spirited lamb here? Yeah. Second place

in group one. That's fantastic. Now you need to go back to the ring here Pretty soon, huh? Yeah. Great. Thanks, Mike, for coming out and showing your lamp who still doesn't have a name. And we hope you do well at the at the livestock auction. Thank

you. We're sitting here with the chairman of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, Janet Nicholas with First District. And Janet first must ask you What do you think of that? You didn't know? Unfair so far. I think it's fantastic. It looks like it'll be a wonderful

two weeks. Listen, you are noted as being a supporter of youngsters. Uh, that your thought about the fair right? Absolutely. There's certainly the four h and the FF A events. And there's really something for Children of all ages, including adults to do in this fair and

to enjoy grown up kids. Absolutely. Incidentally, there's a lot of free entertainment. There sure is on their side, shows magical shows. I happen to be a fan of magic, so I'll be wandering around the grounds throughout these two weeks. Janet, you represent the first district. What

do you think of this moment? County Fair as an a event for the county general. To me, it's really amazing that for 53 years we've been celebrating a sense of community, a sense of talent in this community, from the youngsters to people of all ages who

do crafts and flower arranging. It's really a celebration of our agricultural past or present, and hopefully our future. It seems to be a celebration of us two people. It sure is. It's a nice feeling to have a community event where people get together, and I know

I see people with fair that sometimes I don't run into all year long and it's a good chance to touch base and get re acquainted. The other thing is gonna happen over here. There's horse racing takes place from July 25th through August 6. They have a

rating, seven other up. There's gonna be a lot of excitement in just about every area there. And Janet, we really take pride in having you as our chairperson of the Board of Supervisors. And thank you for stopping to talk with us. Thank you so much. Okay,

let's go back and see some more of this. Magnificent 1989 home. A county fair. 14 Days of magic Moments, The Sonoma County Fair, July 24 through August 6th, Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. How you doing, everybody? And

welcome back to Sonoma County in the eighties at the fair. You know, every year the fair offers many, many pieces of entertainment. But perhaps the greatest thing that fair has is a professional entertainment. There's most of it free, and the woman who coordinates all that and

matter of fact starts working the day after the fair, lighting up acts for the next year. Jane Engle and Jane, you really have got a loaded lineup this year, right? It's so loaded this year that I think nobody's gonna know ahead of time. They're just gonna

have to come and may take it minute by minute. We've got so much going on. Uh, Jane, you've got two weeks of entertainment now. This first week is gonna be a beauty. I know, but why don't you describe the entertainers that are gonna be here and

maybe some of the other entertainment that scheduled for this week? Okay, well, one of the acts were real excited about is Tuesday night, July 25th. We're gonna be having asleep at the wheel, and that will be two free shows at seven and nine. And we've been

getting calls for weeks on now. And those boys know how to party and they know how to play. So it's gonna be fun. That will be a good one. Then on Wednesday, we're going to be having a special act called the Rate Camacho Band. And they

do, Ah, mixture of Hispanic and English music. That is lots of fun. So I think everyone's going to enjoy that. Then, on Thursday. We're gonna be having our special day at the beach, and this is something new is something we've never done before. We're having a

theme day. We're going to truck in a couple of tons of sand, put up a few palm trees and some waiting bulls, and we'll have Papa Doo run run into play beach music so we can all come and pretend for Southern Californians. Then on Friday we

have Friday and Saturday. We have our PRC, a professional rodeo in Chris Beck Arena, and also on Saturday we have the old time Fiddlers contest will have fiddlers of all ages from all over the West Coast coming to compete. Where were you that will be in

red with theater? And that starts about 10 45 and goes on all day long and then Sunday Ah, oh, Sunday is farmer stay Lots of excitement on Sunday in addition to being Farmers Day. It's also yesterday and will be having our Mexican fiesta in the red

with theater with a great lineup. We have stars coming from Mexico, Ballet Folklorico, a little bit of everything and then up in Chris Beck, Karina, the former state program is going to be exciting this year. And let's see, we also have, of course, the just in

time jugglers. We have the backyard circus where kids can get into the circus. Ah, let's see. Free elephant rides, of course, every day. And Chester, the six foot tall rabbit, will be on grounds for the entire two weeks. Look, Janie and expected. It's a tremendous amount

of activity schedule for this first week of the Snow Mechanic sales were to come back. Next week. I'm going to talk to Jane. We talked to her about the second week of the fair that some of the entertainment scheduled for that time. Ladies and gentlemen, let

me tell you that if you want a good day's entertainment and an evening's entertainment, come to the normal county fairs, the best market in the business. $4 for adults, $1 for kids, 7 to 12. Kids six and under. The military in uniform always get in free.

It's really great. So come on out to the fair. We'll be looking for you, however, when everybody we're standing in front of the new styling product and we're gonna be talking to a gentleman on the left of your screen bob ranking. He's the assistant chairman of

There's No Mechanic Fair Racing Committee. Bob. Earlier, we talked with Bob Worth and we talked with a lot of red. They told us a little bit about the track itself. But what about the racing program? Bob? How long is it going? Well, the racing program here

at the fair will be We're going from July 25th. You August 6 13 days there to racing days. How many races are there each day? 13 races a day. It's a 13 Siri's. Okay, Uh, victory races D today. What kind of horses? Right there. The majority

of the races or for the thoroughbreds nine daily and the emerging breed. Your Appaloosa Quarter horse and Arabian will fill in the card each day. Okay. Now, Bob, what about the total amount of persons that we offer here at the fair? What will be offering over

a $1,000,000 in purses at the Sonoma County Fair this year? Well, you know, that's really amazing. How does that stack up as faras racing around the country? Some tracks don't handle, uh, the amount of money we do have heard. Oh, I think we're in top 20

in the United States for ah, mutual handle. It are our county fair, which were in the same league. A Santa Anita and highly and all the rest of the county family only race two weeks a year, right time. What about the paddock behind this? Tell us

a little bit about this. Yeah. The paddock behind us was dedicated just last year to our grounds Supervisor Larry Albini. Yeah, The product was dedicated in 1988 and we're very proud of it. Yeah, I'll be No, I think you're honoring him again this year to hurt

you at the flower Show. Been with a fair over 20 years. He's a great guy, and he does a tremendous job of taking care of track. Bob, I sincerely hope that this is the best that ever. How long have you been on the fair board? For

five years. And have you been involved in the racing committee all that time? Yes. I have enjoyed it very much on, uh, look forward to a good year. I certainly do. Okay. And welcome back. Thanks for coming out. And I have been coming to this fair

for a long, long time. And we think that this 1989 edition maybe the best ever. Now, let's go see something else at this magnificent 1989 Cinema County Fair. Hi. We're here outside the racetrack at the bit off Chevrolet Booth. And I'm here with Jeff Markets. Hi,

Jeff. Tracy, how are you? Nice to see you today. Pretty good. Hey, what's going on here with been off Chevrolet? Well, we're giving away a truck or a car with K H T t the heat. And what you do is you pull this Big Bertha slot

machine and if you get one of the winning combinations that automatically get you into the finals And then on August 6 Sunday afternoon, we're gonna be broadcasting the names of the winners. And if they hear their name on the radio station, they call in and make

it third choice of this. Tough is there's a truck or family pleasing. I marks it, and it's a great time. What a great deal in all somebody has to do is just come by. All somebody has to do is come by, pull the slot machine, and

that's all there is. to it. No purchase required. Frank, This is one of the free events at the fair that you could win something great. Well, I like your faith in me. Let me try here three about Oh, so right in the final drawing. Ladies, gentlemen.

Perfect. Well, that was worthwhile. Now back to the fair. Maybe I'll win the car. We're studying in the patio of the Spaghetti Palace at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. This is a famous box correctly. Everybody's, I think just ever been to the fair. Has seen it at

one time or another. Were sitting with the owner of the Spaghetti Palace Rd Plato. And Art is a member of the fair family has been for many, many years. And he noted for spaghetti is noted for a lot of other things. But say I noticed one

thing. Ah, a lot of things have changed. Yeah, we put a no addition. We put a new kitchen. What's in the kitchen was a no new part. I know stainless steel pot. We call on this team killing. We cook by steam now instead of by open

flame, which is lots, senator, but a lot better. How long have you been involved with the L. A County fair? Quite a few years in it. 15 15 years young Quicken spaghetti, but not spaghetti for 15 years. Listen, you make a tremendous amount of fans every

year, and I know just tell about Spaghetti. Uh, how long does it take you to prepare the spaghetti for a day? Well, we we prepared as we go along. We don't prepare for the all day we cook. We started in the morning like it's five o'clock

to making sauce. We make the sauce fresh every day, and then you take a long time to do that. And then the pasta himself. We started cook about 11 oclock. It will be ready by 11 30. We we cook as we go along all day. You

have two kinds of two or three kinds of spaghetti, too. I know he had the famous pesto sauce, and that's green, which many years ago, when the restart, it was only maybe 34% of people. They know what the pester waas and we have to keeping, given

the recipe and tell us what it is. They will want to know why that there's a green sauce. Who? Making green. And now I, which is Ah, least 50% they Afghani after agreeing the pesto sauce and the and that sauce Well, like has been here is

we said he said a moment ago. For 15 years, it's been a very successful operation of telling us seriously. People have all over the county come into the fair or from out of the county, and you can buy an s spaghetti and they go away talking

about how delicious it is, and we're gonna try some of just a couple of minutes. Listen, good luck this year. You looking for a good year this year? Yeah, I think so. I fed us. We never have. No, Probably because we're keeping the same customer. They

keeping come back years after years. And they just wait for this and that. We want to think those people very much to be so fatal. And the pattern eyes are boot thing and the rest of the fair. I mean, we're not damn it. Don't be no
