Sanoma County chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned, according to the famed plant wizard Luther Burbank Dover's County, with 1,010,000 acres of land and 1574 miles of scenic roadways, Cinema County is rightfully famed for its agriculture. Did a culture, industry and

recreation, as well as for the amazingly successful ethnic and economic mixture of its more than 340,000 residents on for the forward looking philosophy of its local governing bodies. Now we invite you to take a closer look at Sanoma County in the eighties with your host, Rich

McGlinchy. How you doing, everybody And welcome to your 1988 Sonoma County Fair. It's going to be a great one is you're going to find out in the next half hour. This program brought to you by Post Newsweek Cable is a public service. But before we actually

get into the discussion of the 1988 there and show you some of the sights here, let's take a look at our fares past. That's right. The first recorded fair rich and Sonoma County was held in Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa. That was way back in 18

55. Then, from 18 59 through the early 19 hundreds, it was held in locations throughout the county, including Petaluma, Sebastian, Pool, Healdsburg, Sanoma and, of course, Santa Rosa. Then, in 18 99 the Snowmen County Agricultural Park Association brought 90 acres of today's fairgrounds and built our

present one mile racetrack. About a year later, Ira piers, for whom? One of our nearby streets, his name, brought the 90 acres. After the next two decades, he bred and raced standard bred horses on this site. Then, in 1909 something really awful happened. Wagering on horse

races was outlawed, and darkness fell over all forms of racing. And betting in California for the next 24 years is a matter of fact. Then, in 1933 the voters passed a law that legalized parimutuel betting in California, and this law also required that a percentage of

the waging receipts be used for education, agriculture at California's county and state fairs. So about two years after that, in 1936 4 local businessmen, whom we now call the founding fathers of the present fair Joseph T. Great email. See Craft BG Garrett and Ernest L. Finley

got together along with a few other Santa Rosa businessman in the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce, and they formed the presence Sonoma County Fair Association. Off season fairgrounds activities has also grown tremendously over the years. Besides the annual 14 day fair in July, grounds were used

daily for recreational, social, agricultural and commercial activities. Most importantly, though, the growth of that fair has been done without any tax being levied against US Sonoma County property owners. In other words, the fair pays its own way. That's something you should all be very interested in

hearing. Furthermore, the fair is truly a team enterprises controlled by a 20 member board of directors operating through the fair manager. And it's also responsible through the elected Board of Supervisors to you, the people of Sonoma County. As you can see, it truly is your fair.

So come on out. Enjoy it. We're gonna be looking for you. How you doing, everybody? I'm standing here with two gentlemen who take a very important role in this 1988 Cinema County fair. On the right here screen is the president of the Sonoma County Fair Board.

Jim Lynch. On the left, Your screen is Carl Campbell, Campbell and Associates, the official publicist for the Cinema County Fair. Jim, First of all, you want toe welcome our folks and invite him out to the fair. Definitely. The fog burned off just in time. So it

looks like if this is any indication, we're gonna have a great couple of weeks out here. Call one to ask you one thing in particular, you have come up with a couple of great themes the last couple of years. You and your people. Last year, oddly

was poultry in motion. And this year is what t g i f goats being our theme animal this year. And you know, T G I f has a lot of meanings, but, uh, you know, one of them might be think goats. It's fair time or thank

goodness it's fair time. I think that's what everybody's saying when they see the TG idea. Thank goodness The third time. And I know I'm thinking that Jim, about the Flower show and some of the special things this year Flower Show is just outstanding. Last night they

had the champagne preview as you know? And it was I think there is over 1500 people that were there, and it's really gonna knock your eyes out. It's just gorgeous. Ray Cam IQ shows Carnival is back again this year, which is a big hit last years.

You know, you've got more livestock, I think, than we've ever had. And just everything's looking like it's coming together very nicely. Good. Go. Uh, how do you view the 1988? You know what? I think this is gonna be one of the best we've had. And, uh,

we're really looking. If the weather holds up Teoh breaking last year's attendance records with any luck, and I think people are really going to come out, there's a lot of excitement. The media has been very good to us. Lots of publicity has been out there, and

people are really talking about the fair. All right, ladies and gentlemen, you heard it from two gentlemen who have a great deal to do with our Sonoma County Fair. We've been talking to Jim Lynch, and we've been talking to coil Campbell. Now, remember, the fair runs

from the 2050 July through August 7th. It's a wonderful. Fair. So come on out. We'll be looking for you. What is this place, anyway? I don't know. Let me do it. Wait. Hold these truth, truth, truth, truth to me. Well, what is it? I don't want

to. Stupid. If we don't end illiteracy in America, it may end us. Ah, Thought from the American Association of University Women Lights the action, the sounds, the sights, the taste Welcome to the midway at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Yes, this is the sort of excitement that

abounds here at the 1988 Sonoma County Fair last year, Ray Cam IQ shows took over the midway at the fair and veteran fairgoers, you're going to notice a few changes because of that. There was a lot of success last year, partly due to the overhauling of

the midway area. Right now it looks like a park atmosphere, complete with landscaping, old time city street lights, park benches. It's a whole new atmosphere, one that the family is going to really enjoy. Of course, there are lots of rides. We've got the huge Ferris wheel,

the grand wheel imported all the way from Europe. It is the single largest traveling Ferris wheel in the country and you can see it right here in this Sonoma County Fair. Giants. Rob, That's from Germany. It's a musical. It. So you've got Have you got to

come down here and see this? We're gonna be having fun. The California Raisins Air. Here you can have your games of chance. Anything you want at the Sonoma County Fair, We'd like to spend some time talking to Brent Stock, who is part of the Rake. Amick

shows brand stock and friend here at the Sonoma County Fair. Midway is with the Rake Amick shows for the second year here in Sonoma County. What can you tell us, brand about this year's carnival? We've got a heck of a carnival here. We brought seven brand

new rides this year. Beautiful equipment. We've got some gorgeous new stuff. We've got a brand new twist only twist in the United States. We've got a landscape midway gorgeous around. It's good food, good games, good people. You've got the best car on the country right here.

So in other words, there are lots of reasons for everybody to come out to the Sonoma County Fair and take advantage of the ray comic shows. Definitely, we've got a fun show. There's plenty to do this plain to see. If you just want to come out,

look around or walk around a little bit. You'll have fun. You'll see smiling faces, people having fun, people enjoying themselves, courteous employees. Very nice atmosphere. That sounds great. I also understand that Gumby and the California raisins are very big this year on the games of chance.

Is that true? Really big. It's taken over for the spuds Mackenzie. We've got Gumby, Gumby, Gumby. And if you want a raise in, we'll feed you when we got raising. Coming out our ears. We've got rides, We've got raisins. We've got Gumby is We've got a

little bit of everything here at the Rake Amick shows at the 1988 Sonoma County Fair. Why don't you come check it out? One of the most scenic locations at the Sonoma County Fair has got to be the top of the grand wheel, the single largest Ferris

wheel in the country. And we are there now. What a magnificent view it gives of the entire Sonoma County Fair. All the activities, the racetrack and one of The great things about the Rake Amick shows here at the Fair Grounds is that they received a very

prestigious award, the A R E A award. It's a carnival safety award, very rarely given out to carnivals in here in the West, but the rate comics shows have received it. So that's good for moms and dads to know and frankly, good for the rest of

us to know to who are sitting up here on the top of the world. It feels like at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, we're looking forward to the trip down, but all the way around, you can see everything you'd ever want to see about the Sonoma County

it works for all of us. United way. I'm here with Sheila Quints, who is the premium supervisor. But that's not the correct title. What is it? Premium and exhibit coordinator Premium. An exhibit coordinator. She has to do with everything in the way of the exhibits and

entries at there. We're gonna learn a little bit more about what's atmosphere? First of all, about how many entries do you have in here? Well, we have over 30,000 entries when you start adding up all of the baked foods, preserved foods, clothing and animals and livestock

that come into the fare. Well, where do you start planning your year, so to speak today after the fair. Just about, actually. We take a couple of weeks and a few months to get everything in order after the fair. And then bye bye, January. We're already

starting to plan our 1989 fair. All right, what are build buildings that hold the exhibits and where they're located and tell us some of the things. Okay, we're right in front of the VG Garrett building, which is our adult homearts divisions. That's where right now, actually,

we just finished receiving baked foods this morning and the judges air busy in there, judging all of the cookies and cakes. Also in that building, we've got our adult HomeArts ceramics and hydroxyl sewing feature booths, various entries in their readers in some of the other building.

Okay, next to that is the EEC Craft Building, and that is our junior exhibits and same thing. They have fish tanks in there, junior feature boats, clothing, they've got, their woodworking projects and everything else. And then our other building is our fine arts building, which is

Finley Hall. And in there is sculpture, painting, photography and industrial education projects like the woodworking that that the youngsters doing school. You know, we tell everybody every year. It just fair that one of the magnificent things about fair the animals are really two things with the

kids and the animals, especially the kids showing their animals. Now there's not a lot of animal competition. Oh, yeah, and we've been real busy. Last night we were weighing in over 600 market lambs, and right now, the for each market lamb show is underway, and there's

a lot of activity up in the barns. They judge your lambs for different things. How many other animals? Way we're doing our open swine show as well. Beef and dairy cattle will be coming in later this week. And then next week we'll have the four h

beef and dairy in. We've also got a building full of rabbits right now. Yeah, but they don't have more. Uh, incidentally, how many are rather not take the back? Not how many, but what kinds of, uh, entries. 10 people make the fair. Well, this year we

had this year, we had an actual entry drive where we went out in front of supermarkets and shopping centers and had a nice display. And we we talked everybody as they were going by and encouraged them to enter. Tell him go ahead. You can do it.

You know, there's a lot of people out there that say you do a bacon good chocolate chip cookie, and we were out there to try to encourage people to enter. Um, really, what we have available is for amateur residents were not looking so much for professionals,

but we want the Thea amateur resident in our community to showcase themselves by entering at the fair. So if you can page or you can stop or if you condone needlework, stick Cherie or any of these things will be staying here. You should really contact there

and enter your way. Really, really are out to encourage people to enter because it makes them that much more part of the fair. It is their fair. And when an exhibitor brings an exhibit in and then brings their family back to see the ribbon they won,

they feel a part of it. And that's what we're here for. That's really terrific to see these people walk out with their blue ribbon, and there's a feeling of pride you seldom see. It really is. It's nice, and it's people un interested so much in the

cash awards we have. Although we do offer over $225,000 in cash awards, that's how much will be paying out this year. But more importantly than that, it seems like those ribbons or what really capture somebody. Well, this is the informality of the failed people. Go here

in there. Mr Chiller. We want to thank you very, very much for coming by and talking to us. Render people have to put in directories for next year. Well, our premium books will be out in May, and then they're out for about a month of six

weeks in our entries close just about a month before the fair opens. So that means the paperwork and everything needs to get in by then. Then they bring their entries right before the fire. So, as I said a minute ago, if you paint sculpt, you need

a work to do goods. Be sure next year to contact eloquence and enter your your products in the snow. A county fair. You, too may wear a boot with a Blue River. You see a little later. Hi there. I'm just been inside E l Family Hall.

We'll find many of the top adult exhibits of this year's Sonoma County Fair, including fine arts, painting, photography and sculpture, plus student vocational skills. Demonstrations in woodworking, welding, sewing and drafting will also be done here daily. It's well worth a visit to see these great demonstrations

and displays. So come out and see us. We'll be looking for you. The goat is the featured animal here at the 1988 Sonoma County Fair. We're trying to coax one right into camera range. Even as we speak, you will be able to see pygmy goats, dairy

goats, Angara's and we'll give you a chance to taste goat milk, goat cheese and, yes, even goat yogurt. A little bit of everything for you here at the Sonoma County Fair. He seems to like it, and I know you will, too. The goat exhibit is located

on the lawns the west of Finley Hall. So if you get a chance to get down here, please take advantage of it. Also around the corner behind Finley Hall is Uncle Sam's farm. That's a chance for you, the big kids and your little kids to toe

actually pet some of the farm animals. It's something the kids always remember, and you will, too. So we're looking forward to seeing you. So where the goats here at the Sonoma County Fair, The 1988 featured animal this year. Pretty good owed, sir. No. Yeah. I'm standing

in front of the sheep barn judging area where the actual judging of the forage market lamb is underway. This is one of the many major animal judging competitions, which will take place over the two weeks of the 1988 Sonoma County Fair. Judging for the best and

sheep cattle swine be lamb, poultry, rabbits and Katie's for both the four H members and F F A is now underway and will continue on until the major livestock auction later in the fair. In the preliminary judging we're witnessing, at present, more than 600 lambs will

be exhibited. They'll be shown and judged for muscling growth lines, proper finish as well as the handling of the land by the young owner. Let's take a peek as the judge carefully looks over each competitor before rendering its final decision. Hi

only $4 for those 13 years and older, and that's a heck of a bargain when you consider all the entertainment to the fair reactor 7 to 12. The admission is $1 for youngsters six and under, and the military uniforms, the admission is always free. The county

fair is a vital part of California's heritage and continues to ride a highly enjoyable and educational opportunity for the entire family, plus an opportunity for our communities to get together and showcase our achievements. That's not all, either. There's just so much to the Sonoma County Fair.

One of the nice things about any county fair is that you can hear touch, feel everything that you can't get through a photograph through a book or anything. Everything you want to know about the county in terms of agriculture, in terms of achievement, all of that
