Description
One of the first to attempt to grow vinifera grapes in the East, Loubat planted Bordeaux cuttings in his two vineyards, in Brooklyn and in New Jersey. He describes viticultural practices used in France and adapted by him in America. from Jan and Dan Longone's Wine and Food Catalogue 1995. "Alphonse Loubat, a New York merchant born in France, planted a large vineyard of vinifera vines in Brooklyn in the 1820's and published a book, in both French and English, called The American Vine-Dresser's Guide (1827). Interesting chiefly as a late memorial to the futiel belief that vinifera would do well in the American east after two hundred years of unbroken failure, it was, for some unexplicable reason, reprinted in 1872, when its views had long been discredited." -- Thomas Pinney, A History of Wine in America, page 188.
