EDITOR — If you don't mind I would like to set the
record straight regarding the Bodega Post Office.
I read your article in the June 23, 1977 edition and
found a few errors. One glaring mistake was that
you said James McCaughey was a nephew of Stephen
Smith of Smith Ranch. There was absolutely no
relationship there. James McCaughey was my grand¬
father as well as M. J. Cunninghame's.
The Bodega Post Office was the third in the county,
not the second as stated. Sonoma was> first in 1849;
Petaluma was second, 11 days earlier than Bodega.
“In 1867 the Bodega post office was renamed Se¬
bastopol and for nearly 50 years there was no post
office bearing the name Bodega" so your article
says. 15 years later there was a Bodega post office
established at Bodega Bay on Oct. 9. 1882. It was dis¬
continued on June 23, 1887.
Your article implies that the post office was located
in the McCaughey Bros, store from the beginning.
It was first located on Capt. Stephen Smith's Ranch
thus the name Smith’s Rancho post office. The Cap¬
tain's nephew was the first postmaster in 1854. It
most likely was moved to Bodega Corners when
Nathan N. Hedges became second postmaster on
July 14, 1856. Hedges brothers had a store there
before George R. Rossiter, postmaster in 1860, built
McCaughey’s store in 1860.
