Description

Biographical or Historical Note

The "Contra Costa," built the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1914-1930, was, at 433 feet, the longest double-ended railroad ferry every built. Sister ship to the "Solano" (1878-1930), the Contra Costa carried Southern Pacific trains across Carquinez Strait between the terminals at Point Benicia on the north and Port Costa on the south. Construction of the railway bridge over Carquinez Strait rendered the ferries obsolete. The Contra Costa was dismantled for scrap, although a portion was apparently scuttled at Morrow Cove, near Vallejo.
