On Saturday afternoon, January 29, we were to
meet the girls of San Rafael High School at
Truitt's thretre, but owing to unavoidable circum¬
stances, they were unable to come, an 1 the game
was postponed indefinitely.
Friday isn't always an unlucky day, or at least
didn't prove so to the Healdsburg High girls' Bas¬
ket Ball team. On the fourth of February, the
jolly bunch took the afternoon train for Frisco
andt hence to Mills College, where they were to
meet the girls' team of that school.
But owing to the fact that one of our team, El-
va Beeson, was unable to go., it seemed as though
our team was incomplete. Nevertheless, we went
ahead with a greater determination that we would
not lose, and have to come home with a hard luck
story.
About eight-thirty we arrived at the college
and were met and heartily greeted by the girls'
team. Saturday morning at 10:30 we were to
meet and play on the college court where we had
played the year before. The game was a good one
atlhough the score showed rather one-sided for the
Healdsburg team. At the end of the lirst half the
score stood 14-2 in our favor. As the Mills team
made several line fouls and our team was heavy
on guarding, there were a great many free throws,
which caused delay and a slow effect. In the se¬
cond the colle=e girls proved themselves superior
to the work in the first half, but were unable to
overcome the score that the H. H. S. goalers were
running up, the final score was 28-7.
After the game the girls took the train for home
where they were witnesses at the |sub-league finals
of the boys' basket ball. A hearty thanks is ex¬
tended by the H. H. S. to the college girls for the
entertainment they were given.
H. H. S. Girls have also received a challenge
from tne J.
О.
C. Culb girls of San Francicso.
This too, will be a good game, as they have won
honors throughout the Bay cities.
’ It is an old saying that"if there is true patriot¬
ism behind, the battle is half won. This adage
was never more thoroughly proved than in the last
three games played by our boys. The first "game
with Mission H. S. was quite interesting and was
voted by all the spectators to be one of the most
scientific games played on this court. The score
stood 16 to 7 at the end of the first half, and in the
sceond half our boys threw several more goals, but
in this half the visiting team played a strong
game, but our boys were too [many for "them, and
we won the game with a score of 21 to 17
The most exciting game of the year, however,
was played with Santa Rosa on our cou^t. It was
interesting from the start to the finish. During
the first half however, the home team was unable
to get in form, and at the end of the first the score
stood 16 to 7 in favor of Santa Rosa. This looked
black for Healdsburg, and the boys were sore at
the world in general and themselves in particular.
When the whistle blew for the second half, every
man went out with the determinaton to do some¬
thing or bust, [an consqeuently the game went our
way from then on. When the first goal was made
there was considerable excitement but when the
second, third, fourth, etc., followed in rapid suc¬
cession all that could be [heard was one confused
roar of voices, clapping of hands and stamping of
feet. With this encouragement the boys simply
overwhelmed their opponents and won the game
with a score of 26 to 21, making nineteen points in
the last half, thus showing what material they
were made of. This was the championship game
of the Northern Sub-League. The team was com¬
posed of Scatena, Lampson, Schulze, Brannum and
Basil Hall.
Also the High School won from Sonoma recent¬
ly. This string of victories has been quite a record
for the school.
The time is drawing near for the beginning of
the track season, and it is the earnest desire of
the school to get the track finshed so as to begin
training. The manager was only able to get a few
men to work for the last few Saturdays, but it is
hoped that the next time there will be more there.
There is some very promising material for a
good team this year, and we hope to make things
warm during some of the meets.
