Portrait of General Joseph Revere (1812-1880), career US army officer.

Biographical or Historical Note

General Joseph Revere (1812-1880) career US army officer; grandson of Paul Revere; as a Lieutenant in the US Navy attached to the sloop "Portsmouth" under the command of John B. Montgomery and under orders from Commodore Sloat, left that ship at Yerba Buena (San Francisco) with a naval force at 4 AM on July 9, 1846 and arrived in Sonoma at noon of that day where he raised the American Flag on the flagstaff on the Sonoma PlazaH.
