The photo of Rainford shows him in fatigues and helmet, holding a lettter, smoking a cigar and with a beer can between his knees, about 1968. Medals listed Top to bottom- Left: BRONZE STAR: A U.S. Armed Forces individual military decoration and the fourth-highest award for bravery, heroism or meritorious service. AIR MEDAL: Awarded to personnel who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Armed Forces of the United States, shall have distinguished himself/herself by meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. Awards may be made to recognize single acts of merit or heroism, or for meritorious service Listed Top to bottom- right: NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL: Awarded to anyone who serves on active duty in the United States military during a designated time period. ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL: Awarded to any enlisted member of the United States Army who completes three consecutive years of "honorable and faithful service." PURPLE HEART: Awarded as an entitlement entitled upon being killed or wounded in any action with an opposing armed force of a foreign country in which the Armed Forces of the U.S. are or have been engaged. Sebastopol resident Spec-4 Edward George Rainford was wounded in combat on June 13, 1968 and was helicoptered to the USS Hope. Rainford was able to call home a few days before he died. He is interred at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Rosa. Rainford attented Analy High School and was one of 12 children of Mr. & Mrs. John Rainford.
