Stone hop kilns on the Peterson Ranch, located on Guerneville Road northwest of Santa Rosa, Calif. July 1949

Biographical or Historical Note

Kilns were built for and operated by Augustus D. Peterson (October 28, 1871-July 14, 1942), a pioneer hops farmer in the area. A. D. Peterson was one of seven sons of early homesteaders Martha Steele Peterson and William Peterson, who homesteaded a quarter section along Santa Rosa Creek adjacent to present-day Guerneville Highway. His brother, Raford Peterson also grew hops on the former Wohler Ranch and had an eight kiln operation (the kilns burned to the ground in 1945; the Raford Inn on Wohler Road is the only remaining portion of the ranch). A. D. Peterson's ranch, with two kilns, was located near Santa Rosa Creek, west of Willowside Road. See A. D. The kilns were still standing in 1970, as evidenced in Peterson Ranch photographs included in Sonoma State professor Dr. Hector Lee's California Folklore Miscellany, Vol. 25, pages 35-36.
