- Description
- Photo--black and white: Photo identified by Ralph Sturgeon as "Logging 73." Loggers standing near or on top of a huge log on Alex Hendren's ranch, Willow Creek drainage, Glynn camp area. Identified L-R: Verner Hendren, "Lame" Charlie Rassmussen, the woodsman. On log: Alex Hendren and Joe McCammon (white shirt, who was visiting that day). The following information was found in Wade Sturgeon's diary (1911-1915) Dad went over on Thursday AM March 9, 1911, and he and Lame Charley worked on this tree getting it ready to fall, until noon when rain run the out for the day. Come Saturday morning, March 11, 1911, Dad went up to Hendren's for Charlie to go over and fall the tree as agreed; but Charlie was off on a "tear," so Dad went back for Nelson who was working for him at the time on the Sugar Loaf. Grandma Wright made them a lunch, so over and at it. By or about three o'clock the tree was down. All the Hendren family, the school teacher of Coleman Valley School (still standing to date) Agnes Granlees (or Granleer), was her name, and Bill Hook, also Elmer Stine made up the crowd of spectators. Later information by phone from Verner--December 15, 1973: Near Glynn's camp was this big tree shown in photo. Noah Jonas & family worked here. One son--daughters Alice, Roda & Bessie were in the wood tan bark, split stuff. A big rough rocky bluff between this area and the Railroad. A long wooden chute where material slid down to RR cars. Also a King Foster--a loner or a boomer worked here. Alex Hendren bought the place in year 1903 according to Verner. Same activity continued more or less up & until the earthquake in April 1906. Big slides below where RR came up caused to be so extensive that it didn't pay for the RR to replace the track. (There was a cookhouse, sheds, cabins, horse barns & bull barn & other buildings. Verner said there was a fine bull shoeing rack made out of 6 x 6
