- Description
- Photo, black and white:, copy; Hop pickers at Cunningham Ranch, 1896. Group of Hop pickers possing with picking baskets in front of harvested, sacked produce. In middle ground are the stripped wires supported by high poles with the remains of vines on wires. Newer growth in background. Background: Hops were among several crops that went through a boom period in Sonoma County. Hops were introduced here by Amasa Bushnell in 1858. In 1874, Otis Allen planted three acres which sold for 27 and one half cents a pound. This encouraged other growers and by 1884 there were 22 hops growers in the county with a total of 376 acres. Harvent brought migrant workers and provided extra work for local people as well. But by the early 1900s that ear came to an end with the apparence of a hop mold.
