Voices from the Fire Fire (00:00:32) Sheriff Dave Thompson: ...that's not good..it's...that area is decimated. She's like, "Yeah, dad it's bad--Sonoma County's on fire." And so I went turned on my police radio and I heard everybody yelling and the evacuations going on and just chaos, so I just went and got my uniform on, ran down to the main office, grabbed a patrol car and just started going out and trying to help where I could. Noah Henderson: As I crossed my living room, the long windowsill was bright orange and I thought there must be some guy in a jacked-up truck with orange headlights out there. I'm gonna go get him out of here and I opened my door and on my left, there was a wall of flames about ten feet away right there. Sandra Pardo: And we went outside to check what's all the noise and that's when we realized it's raining ashes. The smoke was thick and we're at the very end of Barnes in Coffey Park, so our backyard, you can kind of see Barnes Road, the country road, and it was bumper-to-bumper traffic and it's a country road. No one travels in that road at 2:00 in the morning, so we realized there's something happening. Gopi Sheth: I took one Idol from the temple, Ganesha. I don't know how I took that idol. I don't know and I put it in my purse. I said the god will take care of us and we just left. Getting Out (00:02:03) Joshua Weil: There's a building that's gonna survive a fire. There's a building that's built to code that has everything in place to try and sustain it. You know, it's a hospital and to move patients puts them at risk, but at the same time, we're watching the fire close in, we're watching what was happening to the roads. So at 3:30, the fire team --the incident commander for the fire came in and he said--and I'll remember these words forever--"We're making the last stand." So they were using the last, he explained, they were using the last two rows of of trailers and a dry creek bed that's right there between the Kaiser campus and Journey's End to make a last stand. They used that to try and prevent the fire. And so at that time, I said, "Okay, it's time for us to evacuate." David Bell: As we're driving down Highway 12, there's multiple cars stopped in front of us and it turns out tree branches had come down and was obstructing the roadway. I tell Tracy, I'm like I'm...we gotta...I gotta help. Tracy McClendon: I'm like, I wouldn't love you if you didn't. David Bell: So we pull off to the side of the road. Half a dozen people had exited their vehicles. We're trying to clear the roadway because these are huge branches that are coming down that are obscuring...you know, vehicles. People are running over branches. They're getting...you know, flat tires or have to pull off the road, so we we get as much as a debris out as we can. Tracy McClendon: It's nothing but open fields down Highway 12 up until you get to like Oakmont. If you're stuck and there's flames on both sides of the road and then we're trapped going back, like we wouldn't be... I'm like, "Honey I love you, but we have to go." David Bell: I get back in the car I continue driving and as we progress down Highway 12, I'm looking. Okay--are we far enough?--only to see that on both sides of Highway 12 there continues to be spot fire here, spot fire there. We get down the Calistoga. Now on the other side of the hill you can see the glow from--I think it's the Nunns Fire over there and it's intense. And I'm like, "You need to call your friend," because Tracy's friend lives in...right off Calistoga Road and I'm thinking if it comes up and over the hill, it's gonna sweep right through the Middle Rincon area. So she's furiously dialing people and I'm thinking of myself we still need to keep going. Tracy McClendon: I'm like Kenwood is on fire. You need to get out get out get out now. Kenwood is burning. I kept saying it over and over again--Kenwood is burning. Leave! Claire Mollard: I have to say when I when I got there, I just felt like getting out of the car and dancing. I just felt like, "We survived! We survived!" So, you know, it was like that, was just, "I am gonna get out of here! I am gonna get out! I'm gonna get my daughter out! I'm gonna get my dogs out!" And we did and we did we made it. I think...I think it was a bad couple minutes for Josh when he called and all he could hear was Sophie screaming on the other end of the phone. I think that was, I...I don't know what he possibly could have thought then, but that was how it was. It was hard and that's...I was very glad to be alive. I am very glad to be alive. Anger & Frustration (00:05:44) Brian Gearinger: PG&E failed us and the irony is, I'm a lawyer. 25 years ago when I was a young lawyer at a law firm, I represented a tree trimmer. We sued PG&E for causing fires because they didn't trim around their trees. they didn't maintain their equipment properly. And that was 25 years ago and I was also involved because my client testified in the criminal trial of PG&E. PG&E was criminally prosecuted in Nevada County in 1996 and convicted for causing a fire up there for failing to do what they're supposed to do. that Vipul Sheth: We had no idea what was in our insurance policy--in our home insurance policy--and I can tell you that most people had no clue what the insurance policy meant: what was in the insurance policy, what was covered, not covered. You know when we all like sat around the table as friends and say, "Okay well, let's open our policies and see what we've got." Some people were like, "Hey, I've got a good policy" and people like us were like, "Oh my God? What happened," right? Because you would see like, oh my God, they had a house half the size and their insurance policies double ours and the contents are double of ours or three times ours. What did we do or what happened here and it was...it was a shocking... Sally Weare: The worst thing is that the insurance company has made it so difficult to...well, first of all, we were underinsured like everybody else. The cost in California have gone up skyrocketing and even since the fire even more so. The cost per square foot of replacing anything near what you had is is out of...out of whack, I guess you might say. So the insurance company is trying to say that it's all our fault, but we didn't raise our insurance rates and of course they know very well what the insurance world is like and what's happening in California. So where we've we're trying to get at least a rebuildable amount back from them--which is a fair amount you know. No Home (00:08:07) Larry Carlin: We had survived six fires... six...six or seven evacuations in Malibu over 25 years. We were...we were...our hope wasn't gonna burn down. That was pretty...pretty much it. Paul Rosset: I was checking my phone for our alarm system because I wanted this. I knew my alarm system could take pictures and I was taking trying to take photos of the house it said. "Alarm triggered--motion detector." And then it went off again and I got seven or eight in a row: "Bing! Bing! Bing! Bing!" It was, "Glass break." That's the message, "Glass break--family room. Glass break. Glass break--dining room. Motion detected--front door." And I was like. "Oh my god! My house is dying!" And it took three minutes from the point it started to the point there's like power...the panel failed. It was gone and I was desperately trying to get a photo to take but nothing. Didn't do it but I could see it just move through the house and just stopped when the panel melted. I suppose. That's when it felt real. I was like, "Oh shit--our house is gone." Surviving (00:09:22) Lloyd Phillips: ...our oldest son called from Las Vegas, "Gee dad have you heard about the fires in Santa Rosa?" And I said, "No--I hadn't heard a thing because I watched the baseball playoffs and I went to bed." He said, "Yeah, I can't get hold of Mom." So I started calling. I called about half a dozen times and nothing because at that time I didn't know at that time everything was down, but it was all down. And I decided, well, I'd better head for home. So about four o'clock I was driving and I got to Vacaville and our other son, who lives in Tennessee, called and said, "You know, I called my buddy, the sheriff, Dave Thompson, and he's gonna go up there and check on Mom." Katherine Phillips: I kept the air conditioning on and when I was rescued by Dave Thompson, the sheriff, I looked at the mileage on my gas tank and it was nine miles to go, so I had nine miles to go and the air conditioner was on all night. And I moved from the driver side to the passenger side because it was more comfortable there, but nothing was really comfortable. And I said to myself. "Oh my goodness!," you know, when I found out everything was gone. I said, "The only thing I have is the stuff in my car and I've been meaning to clean it out, but if I didn't have this stuff in my car I wouldn't have anything." So now I have everything in my car--it's the reason why I never cleaned it out. Kushiel McClendon: Well it's not exactly being scared. It's something like to tell my kids--if I do have kids later on in life--"Hey, you think that's worse? Why I lost my house in the Nunns Fire me and my mom and my dad when I was 11" (Was I 11 at the time? No, I was 12. Was I really 11? Okay) Cherishing (00:11:26) Shane Weare: ...the sadness, I think, of losing all that stuff. And the sadness also, of the burden on Sally. She...I'm deaf now and a little bit scattered...and she's been an incredible part our strength. So is the community, too. People have been very kind. The other day I was in a store and I said, "What's it like up here after the fire?" And he said, "People are nicer." Cassandra Orozco: "...and when my mom told us to, like, get in the car, I remembered to grab my dog because she was, like, still there behind the little fence that we had and no one really remembered her and so I just grabbed her really fast and we went in the car and we were waiting because my mom was still, like, looking for something. Sofi Pardo: ...and then my dog was just crying the whole time because it was so scary to her to be, like, stuck in a car for so long because there were so many people that wanted to leave just like we wanted to. It was all kind of frightening because we just wanted to get out. Estaban Pardo: We went back to the house and my mom...the whole family...my mom had us digging for her mom's jewelry and I'm like dang. having to look through all this stuff that really meant a lot to her, through the fire and knowing that we're probably not gonna find it that was hard. That was really hard. Forward from Nothing (00:13:03) Judy Carlin: I was too naive to really know what was going to be ahead. And this is hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime experience.l And I didn't see any further than where we were going to stay and making sure that we had some clothes on our backs. Jenafer Carlin-Rosset: I mean you have nothing. So you need everything and that is really time-consuming and really preoccupying. Judy Carlin: ...and there were these mad shopping expeditions to Bed, Bath & Beyond. And Costco, And Target. And throwing stuff into, you know, the carts. Jenafer Carlin-Rosset: There's a lot of stuff in the beginning. That's actually a really good distraction. It prevents you from sort of sitting in the corner and rocking, you know. Judy Carlin: Whatever I bought, I was gonna wear and live with. And it's really only been recently that I actually went out, because it's been six months, and some of what I got was like, you are grabbing stuff that looked like it would fit you... Jenafer Carlin-Rosset: ...and like now we're settled. My parents are settled. We're settled. And now there's this kind of long road ahead of us, of rebuilding and all of the ups and downs that come with that. And, right--we just passed the six-month mark and there was a lot of information that came out about how at six months, it can get really really hard emotionally. And at the time, I was, like, "Hunh. Oh that's interesting." And now I'm like deep in it. I mean I feel like I'm in a really rough place. Oscar Pardo: ...and we're standing by the driveway. And my son looked at the house -- or where the house was--and he broke down. And at that point I...I didn't have time to get emotional. My grieving processing was, I guess, pretty much walking up to that plot, because once my son reacted the way he did, my job was to comfort him and comfort everyone else, and put everything else aside. Whatever was in that house...I couldn't do anything else about it. So my processing was to shut down emotionally, take care of everybody else, and then move. And that's like, sort of been in that state for the better part of this journey...just...just go. Needs and Hopes (00:15:38) Rhea Sheth: This is not something that just goes away. It's gonna...it's a long process. It's a long journey, Sort of understanding that even maybe two years--three years--this may still be affecting someone. And understanding that, and not judging how long it takes to sort of deal with those emotions. Maria Orozco: People who have expressed still being traumatized when they hear, like, sirens and things, like, or they smell smoke. I would wish or hope that there'd be a lot more support for people--free, ideally, or if not, at really reduced cost, because there's a lot of people who are still struggling with that with the emotional part of it and how hard it was, and...and some people I know are still not in in their house--and making sure that people that were affected are being taken care of in all aspects. Amara Pardo: If you're tied to something for so long and instantly, it just goes away--you're gonna feel like in a state of shock like...like it's not real. And the best thing to do at that time is just to say, "It is real but it's gonna be okay," because a lot of other people have done this in their life. And if they can get through that, then I can get through this, and I'm definitely not alone--yeah, there's a whole bunch of other people who are going through the same thing you are. Voices from the Fire Fuego (00:00:32) Sheriff Dave Thompson: ... eso no es bueno ... es ... esa área está diezmada. Ella dice: "Sí, papá, es malo: el condado de Sonoma está en llamas". Creo que ... creo que fueron unos malos minutos para Josh cuando llamó y todo lo que pudo escuchar fue a Sophie gritando en el otro extremo del teléfono. Creo que eso fue, yo ... No sé qué podría haber pensado entonces, pero así fue. Fue difícil y eso es ... Me alegré mucho de estar vivo. Estoy muy contento de estar vivo. Ira y frustración (00:05:44) Brian Gearinger: PG&E nos falló y la ironía es que soy abogado. Hace 25 años, cuando era un joven abogado en un bufete de abogados, representaba a una podadora de árboles. Demandamos a PG&E por causar incendios porque no se recortaron alrededor de sus árboles. No mantuvieron su equipo correctamente. Y eso fue hace 25 años y también participé porque mi cliente testificó en el juicio penal de PG&E. PG&E fue procesado penalmente en el condado de Nevada en 1996 y condenado por provocar un incendio allí por no hacer lo que se supone que debe hacer. ese Vipul Sheth: No teníamos idea de lo que estaba en nuestra póliza de seguro, en nuestra póliza de seguro de hogar, y puedo decirles que la mayoría de las personas no tenían ni idea de lo que significaba la póliza de seguro: qué había en la póliza de seguro, qué estaba cubierto, descubierto. Sabes cuando a todos nos gusta sentarnos alrededor del Mesa como amigos y diga: "Bueno, bueno, abramos nuestras políticas y veamos lo que tenemos". Algunas personas decían: "Oye, tengo una buena política" y personas como nosotros decían "¿Dios mío? ¿Qué sucedió?". Porque vería como, oh Dios mío, tenían una casa de la mitad del tamaño y sus pólizas de seguro duplican la nuestra y los contenidos son el doble de la nuestra o tres veces la nuestra. ¿Qué hicimos o qué sucedió aquí y fue ... fue un shock ... Sally Weare: Lo peor es que la compañía de seguros ha hecho que sea tan difícil ... bueno, en primer lugar, no contábamos con el seguro suficiente como todos los demás. Y luego volvió a sonar y obtuve siete u ocho en una fila: "¡Bing! ¡Bing! ¡Bing! ¡Bing!" Era, "Rotura de cristal". Ese es el mensaje: "Cuarto de descanso: habitación familiar. Rompe vidrio. Rompe vidrio - comedor. Detección de movimiento - puerta de entrada". Y me quede como. "¡Oh Dios mío! ¡Mi casa se está muriendo!" Y tardó tres minutos desde el punto en que comenzó hasta el punto en que hay poder ... el panel falló. Se había ido y estaba tratando desesperadamente de conseguir una foto para tomar, pero nada.
