Biographical or Historical Note

Mabel Stanford (b. 1873 in London, d. 1947 in Marin Co.) married Charles Nougues in November 1895. She was the daughter of Jerome B. Stanford, the brother of Leland Stanford, and Lillian Clark. Clara Whitney (b. 1873 in Petaluma, d. 1954 in Santa Barbara) married Lewis E. Spear, president of Steel Wire Works, in 1893. Ethel Meek (b. 1874 in Alameda) married the architect Albert Sutton in 1895. Edith Crane (b. 1874 in San Francisco, d. 1944) married John Perrit Wallace in 1898. Daisy Gilmore (b. 1873, d. 1948 in San Francisco) married Charles Sage. Ida Kleinhans (b. 1872 in San Francisco, d. 1960 in Los Angeles) married Cesar Remschel in 1906. Ida was the sister of the famous Bay Area Arts and Crafts artist Lucia K. Mathews. The women were all graduates of Mills College, founded as the Mills Young Ladies Seminary in 1852.
