Description

Biographical or Historical Note

The Mirabel Gravel Company operated on this site in the Rio Dell neighborhood of Forestville, California, between 1921 and 1953. Gravel from this location was used in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge during the 1930s. The large concrete structure shown in the photo was part of that operation. A lawsuit against the gravel company was brought in 1927 to halt erosion. Public and local government pressure to stop degrading water quality and the recreational experience of the Russian River eventually forced the plant to close. Sonoma County Regional Parks purchased the property many years after the plant closed and renamed it Steelhead Beach Regional Park.
