A group of people stand next to an antique auto in front of the Mount Weske Riding Stables

Biographical or Historical Note

San Francisco businessman named Adolph Weske, founder of the highly successful California Cracker Company, built his round stables, circled by a mile-and-quarter racetrack at Mount Weske, his country retreat, in the foothills east of 101. Weskes barn was elaborate an elaborate building, with a walkway around the cupola on top so he could watch his horses on the track. The octagonal barn is one of three surviving examples of round barns in Sonoma County.

Creator Note

Hal Skinner (1925-2004) moved to Sonoma County from Indiana in 1965 to serve as the first director of the Audio-Visual Department (later Instructional Resources Department) at Sonoma State College (later University). He later taught in the School of Education until retiring in 1988. He took up artist blacksmithing in retirement and was a featured exhibitor at the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol and Sturgeon's Sawmill in Occidental until his death at age 79.
